NEW DELHI: Noting that domestic violence against women increased manifold during the Covid pandemic, the government is set to launch a campaign to encourage women in rural areas to speak out against gender violence while providing them with grievance and legal redressal.
Briefing reporters about “Nai Chetna”, rural development secretary N N Sinha said the scheme will seek to sensitise women in villages to “not accept gender-based violence as normal”. The month-long campaign will be launched by rural development minister Giriraj Singh at an event Friday to mark the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls.
The campaign will sensitise women against gender-based violence, prepare them to seek redressal and guide them to various institutional mechanisms available to them.
Sinha said women are often unable to identify violence meted out to them because of normalisation of discrimination and violence, and hence they rarely seek support and continue to suffer in silence.
“There are 1,200 gender resource centres set up across the country. A total of 160 more such centres will be launched tomorrow. Women facing gender violence can seek help from these centres,” he said.
The RD ministry will put to use its vast network of self-help groups of women to implement the scheme. Developed as part of the National Rural Livelihoods Mission, the SHGs cover 723 districts and over 6,800 villages. “The idea is that women should have their own identity and not merely as a member of the family,” Sinha said.
“It is a people’s campaign, mobilised by the government. The idea is to bring the issue of gender-based violence in focus and make women aware of their rights and mechanism available to help redress their grievances,” he added.
