NEW DELHI: The Union home ministry, as part of a process to streamline the awards meant for the personnel of various central and state police forces and organisations and make them “more responsive”, has discontinued one award – the Police Antrik Suraksha Seva Padak – completely, and restricted two other awards – Utkrisht Seva Padak and Ati Utkrisht Seva Padak – to only permanent police staff and other permanent supporting staff working state and UT police forces and intelligence organisations of states and UTs.
The latter two awards will stand discontinued in respect of the central armed police forces (CAPFs), central police organisations (CPOs), Assam Rifles, National Security Guard (NSG) and intelligence organisations of the central government and CAPFs “with immediate effect”, said a notification issued by the home ministry on Wednesday.
Sources said the discontinuation of one award and limiting the eligibility for two sets of awards announced on July 23, 2018 is part of a well-thought-out review of all police awards so as to improve the ecosystem for the awards, avoid duplication and make them more responsive in that they honour only the most deserving. The gallantry awards as well as President’s and police medals for meritorious service have not been touched.
