JAMMU: CBI sleuths on Tuesday conducted searches at 36 locations across the country, including in Jammu & Kashmir, in an ongoing investigation related to recruitment of sub-inspectors in J&K Police.
According to police sources, searches were carried out in Jammu, Srinagar (both in J&K), Karnal, Mahendergarh, Rewari (in Haryana), Gandhinagar (Gujarat), Delhi, Ghaziabad (UP) and Bangalore (Karnataka), among other places.
“The premises of former chairman of J&K Service Selection Board (JKSSB) Khalid Jehangir, then controller of examination Ashok Kumar, gang members living in Haryana, certain teachers, and some serving/retired officials of J&K Police, including a DSP, and CRPF were searched in the ongoing investigation,” a CBI spokesperson said, adding that incriminating documents and digital evidences were recovered during the searches.
The CBI had registered a case against 33 accused persons last month after the J&K government cancelled the recruitment of police SIs. The written test for the exam was held on March 27 and the results were declared on June 4. After the list was out, there were allegations regarding malpractices in the examination.
It was alleged that there was abnormally high percentage of selected candidates from Jammu, Rajouri and Samba districts. Violation of rules by JKSSB was allegedly found in assigning the task of setting the question paper to a Bengaluru-based private company.
Investigation revealed alleged payment of Rs 20 lakh to Rs 30 lakh by willing candidates and their families to the accused for accessing the question paper before commencement of the examination.
After the allegations surfaced, the J&K government constituted an inquiry committee. It was alleged that the accused against whom FIR was registered by the CBI had colluded with officials of JKSSB, the Bengaluru-based company, beneficiary candidates and others, and caused gross irregularities in conduct of the written examination.
This was the second time the CBI conducted searches in J&K in this case as earlier the agency had carried out searches at 30 locations spread across Jammu, Srinagar and Bengaluru, and booked 33 people and entities, including a coaching centre in Akhnoor and the Bengaluru-based company.
After cancellation of the SI recruitment examination, the J&K government had also announced cancellation of two more recruitments by JKSSB.
