NEW DELHI: Marking an incredible journey from Rairangpur to Raisina Hills, Droupadi Murmu was sworn in as the 15th President of India on Monday. Murmu, 64, the youngest President yet, and the first to be born in independent India, was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice of India, N V Ramana in the Central Hall of Parliament.
Wearing a traditional tri-coloured Santhali saree that acknowledged her tribal roots, Murmu, in her maiden address, said her election as President of India was not an indivdual triumph, but the triumph of Indian democracy that allowed a poor woman to dream and to rise to occupy the highest constitutional office of the Indian republic.
Only the first tribal head of state and the second woman in the top constitutional post, President Murmu succeeds Ram Nath Kovind.

“It is the power of India’s democracy that a girl born in a poor tribal home could reach the topmost constitutional
post. That I attained the post of President is not my personal achievement. It is the achievement of every poor person in India. My election is proof of the fact that the poor in India can have dreams and fulfil them too,” Murmu said in a speech delivered in flawless Hindi, even though it is not her mother tongue

Murmu, who began her public life as a councillor in Rairangpur and went on to be Jharkhand governor, said she wanted to reassure all Indians, particularly the youth and women, that their interests will be supreme for her as President. Taking a pledge to protect the Constitution of India, President Murmu also quoted Odia poet Bhima Bhoi’s prayer to Lord Jagannath, saying the welfare of the Universe is important, even if one has to suffer the most for that.
