NEW DELHI: Cancer should be classified a notifiable disease, the parliamentary standing committee on health and family welfare has recommended.
In its 139th report, which was submitted to the Rajya Sabha secretariat on Monday, the committee has said that making cancer a ‘notified disease’ will not only ensure a robust database of cancer deaths but also help in determining the accurate incidence and prevalence of the disease in the country.
It has recommended creation of a CoWin-like portal for the registration, real-time data collection, counselling, supportive resources for cancer care along with interactive tools. “The portal can also be equipped to aid those affected by cancer by guiding them through the treatment and management journey,” the committee, headed by MP Ram Gopal Yadav, has said. Cancer is still not classified as a notifiable disease which results in under-reporting of cancer deaths, it adds.
The National Cancer Registry Programme has been working since 1982 through Population Based Cancer Registry (PBCR) and Hospital Based Cancer Registry. The panel says only 10% of Indian population is covered under PBCRs. “The committee strongly believes that there is an urgent need to have more rural-based PBCRs to get realistic information about the incidence and type of cancers across India,” the report says.
It has also recommended encouraging region-based cancer research projects to understand the causation of specific cancer in a specific region and come out with the conclusion and research outcome for cancer treatment.
In the northeastern region, for example, tobacco consumption is high and, therefore, the cases of cancer caused due to tobacco consumption.
