NEW DELHI: NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar has never been a prime ministerial aspirant but is best suited to serve as a bridge between opposition parties since he commands respect from all, his party said on Sunday even as the veteran Rajya Sabha MP told party leaders that NCP will never “surrender” before the “rulers in Delhi”.
The assertion was made by party MP Praful Patel amid renewed activity within the opposition camp to unite all non-BJP outfits, especially in the context of the alleged harassment of opposition leaders at the hands of probe agencies.
Curiously, the claim came months after the octogenarian Rajya Sabha MP declined to run for President as the opposition’s consensus candidate on grounds that he prefers to remain active in electoral politics, and close on the heels of Bihar CM Nitish Kumar’s engagement with opposition leaders after breaking ties with BJP.
The NCP president doubled down on his appeal across parties, asking his party workers as well as the rest of the non-BJP outfits to work together to oust the saffron party from power.
Addressing NCP’s eighth national convention in Delhi, Pawar tore into Narendra Modi’s government and governance over a host of issues ranging from rising inflation, unemployment, its handling of the farmers’ protests and for “fanning hatred” against religious minorities in the country. He also said NCP workers must “strategise” with like-minded parties and undertake joint programmes on issues affecting the common man.
