NEW DELHI: BJP on Saturday said that the arrests of West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee and his aide Arpita Mukherjee are just the tip of the iceberg, with more arrests to come soon.
BJP pointed out that Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee was at the forefront of a multi-party effort to undermine investigative agencies, and now her own minister and party functionaries are in the ED net.
“She [Banerjee] has tried to intimidate these agencies. She tried to hush this matter under the carpet. Chor macha rahe shor because they are desperately trying to hide the evidence of their chori,” Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said at a press conference. West Bengal BJP leader Dilip Ghosh was also present.
Ghosh alleged that TMC leaders have accumulated huge amounts of money over the years, including in connection with recruitment scams, and nobody will believe that its “high command” — referring to Mamata Banerjee — was not aware of this. “Based on the evidence unearthed so far, the top leadership should be questioned,” he added.
West Bengal industry minister Partha Chatterjee was arrested by the ED on Saturday in connection with its investigation into the alleged school jobs scam. The agency also arrested Chatterjee’s close aide Arpita Mukherjee, from whose premises cash amounting to Rs 21 crore was seized. BJP leaders said the raid has exposed TMC’s corruption.
Taking a jibe at Banerjee, Chandrasekhar said she had been praising Chatterjee and now, people know that the appreciation might be for his expertise in handling corruption money.
