NEW DELHI: Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Bismillah Khan Yuva Puruskar awardee Arunima Kumar and the students of Kumar’s eponymous dance company have been selected to perform at British monarch Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations at Westminster Abbey on June 1 this year.
Kumar, an exponent of the Kuchipudi dance form, is an acclaimed South Asian dancer and choreographer based in London. She has also performed at the Buckingham Palace in the past.
A Kuchipudi artist who trained under Swapna Sundari and then under Jaya Rama Rao and Vanashree Rao, Kumar is an economics graduate from Delhi’s St. Stephen’s College and has a master’s degree in finance from the London School of Economics. Despite extended stints in the marketing and corporate sectors, Kumar, who is based in London, remained passionate about dance and turned to full-time dance and choreography eventually.
She has choreographed and performed for all major UK events and venues including the Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s reception to mark the UK-India Year of Culture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Wembley stadium, and for the British Royal Armed forces, among others.
Kumar also runs the Arunima Kumar Dance Company, where the aim is to research, choreograph and present the highest standards of Indian art forms and culture, especially Kuchipudi dance, and to promote them across countries and cultures. In addition to promoting South Asian dance forms and training artists, the dance company engages communities and promotes dialogue and collaboration with world and Indian arts.
