NEW DELHI: In an attempt to revive the farmers’ movement that saw the Centre withdraw the three contentious laws that farmers were protesting against, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) has decided to celebrate their victory on November 26, 2022, to commemorate completion of a year of the withdrawal of the laws by Prime Minister Narendra Modi (November 19) and the day in 2020 that the dharna started on the outskirts of Delhi and their return back to their villages after a 13 month long movement.
A year after the Narendra Modi government withdrew the three contentious farm laws, SKM, an umbrella body of farmers’ organisations, will hold nationwide marches to the Raj Bhawans across states and hand over a memorandum to the respective governors, on their demands – mostly the unfulfilled promises by the Centre on MSP, loan waiver to farmers and other issues. “The idea is to spread the movement across states this time and not make it Delhi centric as every state has its own agriculture related issues,” Mollah said.
This was announced at a press conference at the Press Club of India, here on Thursday by SKM leaders Hannan Mollah, Ashok Dhawale and Darshan Pal, Yudhvir Singh Avik Saha, who also attended the national level meeting of SKM leaders held at Gurudwara Sri Rakab Ganj Sahib on Monday.
SKM leaders said that the Centre had made promises when they withdrew the three laws but have not fulfilled any of them including withdrawing cases against the farmer leaders.
It was decided at that meeting that last year on November 19, Prime Minister Modi announced the withdrawal of the Farm Laws and SKM will celebrate the day as Fateh Diwas.
More than 70 leaders were present at Monday’s meeting, chaired by a panel including Buta Singh Burjgil, Raminder Singh Patiala and Jagtar Singh Bajwa.
It was on November 26, 2020, that lakhs of farmers left for Delhi under the call of the SKM and hence November 26 this year, will be commemorated with marches in every state heading to the respective Raj Bhavans, where memorandums will be given to the Governor. These memoranda will contain the main demand of the SKM as well as the specific demands of farmers in the respective states.
The protesting farmers set out from Delhi to go back to their villages on December 11, 2021, after the farm laws were withdrawn on November 19, 2021. The return journey to their homes were victory marches for the farmers, last year. Hence, on December 11, 2022, the victory day of the protest will celebrated and memorandums will be given to Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members between December 1 and 11.
At its meeting scheduled for December 8, SKM will announce the details of the next phase of the farmers’ movement, with “Karza Mukti – Pura Daam/Guarantee of MSP,” as its main demands.
