Covid-19 numbers continue to drop in the country ahead of the mega festive season beginning by the end of this month. In the week ending Sunday, fresh cases fell below 40,000 for the first time in over four months and deaths from the virus were likely to register more than a 25% drop to around 150.
India is set to report a little more than 37,500 new cases during the week (September 5-11), down around 19% from the previous week, as per TOI’sCovid database. This was the seventh consecutive week of declining cases in India following a 9-week-long surge believed to be fuelled by several new sub-lineages of the virus’s Omicron variant. Deaths have been far fewer during this surge than in the previous waves of the pandemic, reaching a peak of 310 during the July 18-24 week. This week’s toll is likely to be less than half that number at around 150, down from 205 in the previous seven days.
During the week, India’s seven-day test positivity rate the percentage of test samples that come positive dropped below 2% for the first time since June 11, pointing to the decline in Covid infections in the country. On Saturday, the seven-day TPR stood at 1.74%, down from 2.37% on the same day last week.
However, unlike in the previous week (August 29-September 4) when Kerala was the lone state to register a weekly rise in cases, this week a few more states logged a modest increase in the case count. These states are Odisha, where rose surged by 16% to 1,775, Bengal (a rise of 6%) and Chhattisgarh (2.5%).
Meanwhile, Kerala’s tally is likely to be around the same as in the previous week when 9,206 cases were recorded. Maharashtra, which logged 5,978 new cases, down 29% in a week, recorded the second highest tally. Delhi-NCR continued to report a sharp drop in cases, with Delhi and Haryana recording close to a 50% drop in infections.
