In FIFA World Cup 2026, a player or an official shown a red card would be suspended for at least the subsequent game. This applies to both straight red cards and double yellow cards.
How does red card suspension work?
As per Article 10.5 of FIFA World Cup 2026 regulations: “If a player or team official is sent off as a result of a direct or indirect red card (second caution), they will automatically be suspended from their team’s subsequent match. In addition, further sanctions may be imposed.”
As the last line suggests, a player or official can have their suspension extended based on the severity of their offence. Such decisions are taken by FIFA Disciplinary Committee.
Earlier in the tournament, Qatar’s Assim Madibo received a five-game suspension after a review by the committee for a heavy challenge that resulted in Canada’s Ismael Kone suffering a broken leg.
Can a team appeal red card suspension?
Teams can’t appeal to revoke a red card in FIFA World Cup.
The tournament regulations (Article 9.6) states that, ”No protests may be made about the referee’s decisions regarding facts connected with play. Such decisions are final and not subject to appeal, unless otherwise stipulated in the FIFA Disciplinary Code.”
But team can make an appeal challenging the decision by the Disciplinary Committee to extend a suspension. Even if this appeal is successful, the player or official’s original one-game suspension will stay put.
