Riyad Mahrez announces international retirement after Algeria’s FIFA World Cup 2026 exit


Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez announced his retirement from international football after his team was knocked out of FIFA World Cup 2026 by Switzerland.

Breel Embolo ⁠and Dan Ndoye on target for the Swiss as they outplayed Algeria 2-0 in the Round of 32 in Vancouver on Thursday.

Mahrez, who plays for Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli in club football right now, ended his international career with 113 caps and 39 goals.

Born in Clichy, France, Mahrez elected to play for Algeria in 2013, courtesy of his Algerian heritage through both his mother and father.

In 2016, he received the African Footballer of the Year award. In 2019, he captained Algeria to the African Cup of Nations title.

In the 2026 World Cup, Mahrez scored twice for Algeria in a group-stage game against Austria.
