It had all the trappings of an India-Pakistan showdown, complete with emotion and drama.
The men’s 55Kg boxing Round-of-16 bout between India’s Jadumani Singh and Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman in the Commonwealth Games at the Scottish Event Campus here on Sunday carried the intensity of a clash between two estranged neighbours.
Rising to the occasion, Jadumani produced a commanding performance to register a unanimous 5-0 victory and storm into the quarterfinals.
Every round was engrossing as it pitted two contrasting styles against each other. Pakistan’s Rehman, the taller boxer, looked to exploit his reach by landing punches from distance and capitalising on counterattacks.
Jadumani Singh, in contrast, relied on constant movement, darting around the ring with such speed and agility that it became exceedingly difficult for his opponent to land a clean punch.

The opening round was fiercely contested, with both boxers exchanging crisp left-right combinations. Jadumani, however, proved the more accurate and composed of the two, earning a unanimous 10-9 verdict from all five judges to take the round 5-0.
Rehman came out with greater intent in the second, immediately throwing a left-right combination. But Jadumani slipped the punches with lightning-quick reflexes and continued to frustrate his taller rival with his movement. As the Pakistani pressed forward in search of clean scoring blows, tempers briefly flared, with both boxers exchanging animated looks after a close exchange.
Jadumani maintained his composure, landing the cleaner punches to once again sweep the round 5-0, with all five judges scoring it 10-9 in his favour.
Knowing he needed to do something special in the final round, Rehman increased the intensity, looking to exploit his reach and sharp counters. It made for Jadumani’s toughest spell of the contest, but the Indian’s footwork and supreme evasive skills continued to stand out.
While he avoided most of Rehman’s attacks, he also picked his moments really well to land a few telling punches of his own, sealing a commanding unanimous decision.
“It was an important bout for me. I know I am one win away from a medal,” said Jadumani.
