Bangladesh suffered a 0-3 loss to Syria in the AFC Under-20 Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers at the Do’stlik Stadium in Tashkent on Thursday.

This was the side’s second consecutive defeat in the qualifiers after its 0-2 loss to host Uzbekistan, thereby considerably denting its chances of advancing to the continental tournament.

However, the Bangladeshi side isn’t yet out of contention. After India’s 0-4 loss to Uzbekistan in the second match of the match from the group, Bangladesh’s match against the Blue Colts on Sunday becomes crucial. Bangladesh will need to beat India and hope Uzbekistan beats Syria. Then, the head-to-head goal difference equation will come into play.

Against the Syrians, Bangladesh once again found itself fending off attacks. Sustained pressure paid off for Syria late in the first half after Al Najar’s back pass was struck first time by Alam Mamo to find the bottom-right corner.

Minutes later, Marios Al Herek’s facile shot, after a solo run, beat a diving Bangladesh goalkeeper Raj Chowdhury to double Syria’s lead.

Then late in the game, Al Najar bagged his brace after his direct free-kick from distance rolled into the net without any resistance.
