The incident in question took place in the second over of India’s chase of Pakistan’s 55, when Shafali popped a catch back to Sana, the bowler. Sana gestured in the direction of the pavilion as she celebrated, inviting the attention from the officials.
Sana was charged by on-field umpires Nimali Perera and Shathira Jakir Jesy, third umpire Rokeya Sultana, and fourth umpire Rabab Ahsan, and Sana admitted to the infringement in her meeting with match referee Supriya Rani Das.
The offence was a breach of Article 2.5 of the ICC’s code of conduct for players and match officials, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage, or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an international match”.
India won the match by seven wickets after their spinners, N Shree Charani (3 for 7), Prema Rawat (3 for 9), Deepti Sharma (2 for 5) and Shafali (1 for 10) had shot Pakistan out for a paltry score. Sana picked up all the three India wickets to fall.
Pakistan, with one win from two games, play Hong Kong in their third and final group game on Monday evening. India have qualified for the first semi-final, to be played on Thursday, as the group toppers.
