Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick on Sunday took his team to a second consecutive La Liga title with a 2-0 win over Real Madrid, just hours after losing his father.
“I will never forget this day. It was tough to start – my father passed away. But my team is fantastic, it is like a family,” Flick said, speaking to La Liga TV.
The players sported black armbands during the El Clasico as a mark of respect. Flick was visibly emotional at the touchline as the players held a minute’s silence before the kick off to pay tribute to Flick’s father.
However, the team gave something to cheer for as Marcus Rashford and Ferran Torres struck in the first half to seal the 2-0 win.
“They gave everything today. I am proud of the fans. It is amazing [to win] in this stadium and in an El Clasico against Real Madrid, to win La Liga. It was not easy. Everyone thought we could win this, but Real is a fantastic team. We played really good and made the goals in the right moment,” Flick said.
The German coach has to build on the impressive season. Three more wins in its remaining games could make Barcelona just the third team to tally 100 points in a La Liga season, as well as the first team to win all its 19 home games in a single season.
