Essex had fought back on day three and with just 21 balls possible after a two-and-a-half-hour delay, further rain caused the umpires to call the match a draw with no more play possible.
“We’ll obviously keep an eye on [Leicestershire’s appeal decision],” Chris Silverwood, Essex’s director of cricket, said. “We don’t want to go to the second division and we’ve got to hope that doesn’t happen. We can only control what’s in front of us so we’ll just have to wait and see.”
Glamorgan finish sixth in their first season back in Division One for over two decades. Two solid performances towards the back end of the season – here, and against Surrey last week – have kept them safe in a successful campaign.
