The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai is set to name three stands after former India and Tamil Nadu cricketers Ravichandran Ashwin, K. Srikkanth, and S Venkataraghavan.
The stands are expected to be unveiled in their presence, before the BBL opener between Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades on December 12.
The trio all played significant roles for the Indian cricket team across generations.
Ashwin, arguably one of the greatest off-spinners in history, is the second highest wicket-taker for India in Test matches with 537 wickets.
Srikkanth, on the other hand, was an opening batter who was part of India’s 1983 World Cup winning squad. Srikkanth also captained the team during the late 1980s, leading the team in 17 matches- 13 ODIs and four Test matches.
Venkataraghavan, who was also a wily off-spinner like Ashwin, captained the Indian team at the 1975 and 1979 World Cups before he became an international umpire. The 81-year-old officiated in 73 Tests and 52 ODIs before retiring in 2004.
