Lunch Bangladesh 278 and 203 for 4 (Litton 48*, Mushfiqur 39*, Shahzad 3-46) lead Pakistan 232 (Babar 68, Rana 3-60, Taijul 3-67) by 249 runs

Bangladesh extended their lead to 249 runs by lunch on the third day of the second Test against Pakistan in Sylhet on Monday. Litton Das was unbeaten on 48 at the break, with Mushfiqur Rahim batting with him on 39. The pair has so far added 88 runs for the unbroken fifth wicket as they made Pakistan work hard with the match slipping away from them.

Litton, who made an impressive century in the first innings – 126 in Bangladesh’s 278 – continued to be a thorn in Pakistan’s side despite the dank conditions and slow outfield. Mushfiqur, meanwhile, was mostly circumspect until he also unleashed a few big hits, including a slog-swept six off Sajid Khan towards the end of the first session.

Pakistan’s seamers, particularly Khurram Shahzad, used the breezy and cloudy early-morning conditions in Sylhet to his advantage. Shahzad kept beating Najmul Hossain Shanto around off stump, while bringing the ball back into his pads a few times too. Shanto fell to Shahzad in the fifth over of the morning, trapped lbw to a delivery that nipped in off the seam. Shanto made 15 off 46 balls.

It took eight overs for Bangladesh to find their first boundary of the day, Litton driving Shahzad through the covers. It brought a few more boundaries, including Litton pinging a pull shot, and Mushfiqur driving one through mid-off.

Litton survived a run-out chance in the 47th over when he sprinted out of his crease, only to be sent back by Mushfiqur belatedly and be stranded mid-pitch. But Babar Azam couldn’t hit the only stump he had in his line of vision despite having time. Litton was on 38 at the time.

On Sunday, Bangladesh bowled Pakistan out for 232 to take a 46-run lead.

Nahid Rana and Taijul Islam picked up three wickets each after Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taskin Ahmed had taken two apiece. Babar top-scored for Pakistan with 68 on his return to the playing XI after an injury. Babar added 63 for the fifth wicket with Salman Agha, the only partnership of note in the Pakistan innings. Later, Sajid smashed four sixes to reduce Bangladesh’s lead.

After that, Mahmudul Hasan Joy struck a quick half-century, adding 76 runs for the second wicket with Mominul Haque, who fell off what turned out to be the last ball of the second day.
