Toss England win toss, bowl vs New Zealand

England have won the toss and chosen to field first in the opening T20I of their three-match series against New Zealand in Derby.

With play set to get underway under clear, bright skies, the home side are without regular captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, who is still recovering from the calf muscle tear which kept her out of the drawn ODI series. Charlie Dean will again lead the side in her absence.

Dean said at the toss that the pitch looked good but she didn’t fancy the task of defending in Derby.

With regular opening partner Danni Wyatt-Hodge on maternity leave, Sophia Dunkley will bat alongside Alice Capsey, who has been promoted up the order, with Maia Bouchier slotting in at No. 3.

The home side will take in a spin-heavy attack, with Lauren Bell their sole specialist seamer and allrounder Dani Gibson likely to chime in. Sophie Ecclestone will lead the spin department, which also includes fellow left-armer Linsey Smith and offspinner Dean.

Lea Tahuhu, who retired from ODIs earlier this year, will have to wait for her first match of the tour after the White Ferns picked young seamers Bree Illing and Rosemary Mair, who impressed during the 50-over series.
Sophie Devine, who has also retired from ODIs and will join Tahuhu and Suzie Bates making their international farewells at the upcoming T20 World Cup, is in the XI.
