World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen bounced back from his defeat to R. Praggnanandhaa by beating World Champion D. Gukesh in Round 4 of Norway Chess 2026 in Oslo on Friday.
Carlsen had entered the game under pressure after a difficult start to the tournament. He lost to Alireza Firouzja in the opening round and then went down to Praggnanandhaa in a dramatic third-round classical game, leaving him at the bottom of the standings after three rounds.
Against Gukesh, however, the Norwegian found a timely response. The result gave Carlsen a big lift in the tournament and came against the player who had beaten him in a classical game at Norway Chess last year.
