NEW DELHI: Decision on the next Rajasthan chief minister, turmoil within the Congress state unit, the AICC president election, a candidate to contest against Shahshi Tharoor, purportedly with backing from the Gandhis – there’s enough going on within the grand old party now to keep one engaged.
And there’s still no clarity on what card Ashok Gehlot might play, as the deadline approaches for the filing of nomination for the party president election.
Thursday promises to be interesting, with the Rajasthan chief minister expected to meet party chief Sonia Gandhi in Delhi. Here are the latest developments from the unfolding saga:
Ashok Gehlot to meet Sonia Gandhi in Delhi
Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot will meet Sonia for deliberations on Thursday. The talks are expected to have repercussions for the leadership issue as well as the CMship of Rajasthan.
Gehlot the party works under its chief Sonia Gandhi and all issues will be sorted out soon, while admitting that “internal politics” is not an abnormal thing in a political party.
“All of us in Congress worry about the direction in which the country is heading. Tackling that is more important for us. Internal politics goes on, we’ll resolve it,” he said.
Rajasthan to get new CM soon, says Venugopal
AICC general secretary in-charge of organisation KC Venugopal said Rajasthan will have a new CM soon.
“There is no drama in Rajasthan. Everything will be clear in a day or two, and you will know who is going to be the new CM,” he said in Malappuram, Kerala. The party is going ahead with the AICC presidential poll in a most-democratic manner, he said.
Gehlot unwilling to relent?
Some reports from Jaipur saying that the CM Gehlot was unlikely to vacate the chair on his own. Apparently, Gehlot has kept Sonia waiting for three days. Reports also indicated that the Gandhis may defer the Rajasthan CM decision until they have a clarity on the next Congress president.
Digvijaya to replace Gehlot to run against Tharoor?
While Shashi Tharoor is almost certain to run for the Congress president, it is not yet clear who he would be contesting against in the October 17-election. His rival, with speculated backing of the Gandhis, is likely to file his nomination on September 30, the same day as Tharoor.
Gandhi family loyalist Digvijaya Singh has emerged as a likely replacement for the rebel Rajasthan CM for the Congress presidential election.
More names in reckoning for Cong chief
Two more Gandhi family loyalists are said to be in consideration of the Gandhis — Kamal nath met Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday, while AK Antony met her on Wednesday. Both have, however, brushed off the speculation on their candidatures.
The names of Mallikarjun Kharge, Meira Kumar, Mukul Wasnik, Kumari Selja, Ambika Soni and Pawan Kumar Bansal are also doing the rounds. PTI quoted a member close to Kharge as saying that he will file his nomination papers if directed by the Congress chief.
