AHMEDABAD VADODARA/ANAND: Union home minister Amit Shah claimed on Tuesday that Congress did everything possible to insult India’s Iron Man, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and that it had started praising him only now because of the Gujarat assembly elections. He also reiterated that BJP has put an end to ‘curfew era’ which prevailed in the state during the Congress regime in Gujarat.
Addressing a rally in Ahmedabad in the evening, Shah alleged that successive Congress governments dragged their feet over the Narmada dam project because Sardar Patel’s name was connected with it. “Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation of the project even before I was born. I am now 58 years old. After Nehru, there was Indira Gandhi, then Rajiv Gandhi and then Sonia Gandhi, but the project kept lingering because Sardar Patel’s name was connected to it,” he said.
Earlier, addressing a rally in Khambat, Shah said: “From Jawaharlal Nehru to Sonia Gandhi, the entire Nehru-Gandhi family took the utmost care to see that Sardar Patel’s name is omitted, but Narendrabhai made such a statue that whether they (Nehru-Gandhi family and Congress) wish or don’t wish, the entire world visits Sardar saheb’s statue.”
Taking further potshots at Congress, he said no photos of Congress members paying a visit to the Statue of Unity (SoU) can be seen.
“Before 1990, communal riots and smuggling were rampant in the state. Curfew remained imposed for 250 out of 365 days of the year. After BJP came to power, there has been an era of peace, accompanied with rapid development in the state,” Shah said.
He also accused Congress of opposing the construction of a Ram temple at Ayodhya and the law prohibiting triple talaq for vote bank politics.
“But their time is now over and PM Modi’s time has started. Rahul Baba (Gandhi), book a ticket to Ayodhya because a grand temple is going to be inaugurated on January 1, 2024,” he said.
Listing out projects like the Kashi Vishwanath corridor and Mahakaal corridor, along with makeover of temples like the Somnath temple, Ambaji temple and Pavagadh temple, Shah said, “Congress could have done these things, but they did not. They feared vote bank. But BJP does not fear any vote bank,” he said.
He charged Congress and other parties with opposing the move to abrogate Article 370. “They said it will lead to rivers of bloodshed. Rahul Baba, today nobody dares throw a pebble in Kashmir and it stands like the crown of Ma Bharti,” he said amid a loud cheer from the audience.
He said militancy was rampant in Kashmir during the tenure of Manmohan Singh as PM, but with the surgical strike, PM Modi has controlled cross-border terrorism. “And then, Rahul Gandhi asked for proof of the surgical strike,” he said.
Taking a dig at both Congress and AAP, Shah asked if these parties were capable of making India and Gujarat secure. “Can these parties make Gujarat secure? Only BJP is capable of this,” he said.
