Congress: Shashi Tharoor lauds Modi govt for popularising Yoga in response to Congress’s tweet | India News

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday acknowledged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government’s contribution in promoting Yoga around the world in response to a Congress tweet crediting former PM Jawaharlal Nehru for popularising the ancient practice.
On the occasion of International Yoga Day, the Congress today tweeted that Nehru was instrumental in popularising Yoga and even made it a part of national policy.
“Let us appreciate the importance of the ancient art and philosophy in our physical and mental wellbeing and take steps to incorporate it in our lives,” the party said, while sharing a photograph of Nehru performing yoga and doing a headstand.

Concurring with his party’s tweet, the Thiruvananthapuram MP said that we should also acknowledge all those who revived and popularised yoga, “including our government”, for internationalising International Yoga Day through the UN.
“As I have argued for decades, yoga is a vital part of our soft power across the world & it’s great to see it recognized,” he added.
Tharoor tagged the handles of PMO and ministry of external affairs in the tweet.
The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practising yoga. Recognising its universal appeal, in December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.
