KOLKATA: The Calcutta high court on Wednesday directed the State Election Commission (SEC) to requisition within 24 hours not less than 82,000 central forces for the panchayat polls in Bengal, a day after the poll panel had sent for only 2,200 personnel (22 companies). The division bench of Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam held that SEC’s decision to deploy “one company of central forces for each of the 22 districts” was “thoroughly inadequate”.
Another bench of HC directed the CBI on Wednesday to conduct an inquiry into alleged tampering of documents related to nomination papers by the panchayat returning officer of Howrah’s Uluberia. Justice Amrita Sinha ordered the CBI to look into the “serious allegation”, ascertain facts and submit a report on July 7. The HC directed the returning officer to make CCTV footage and instruments from the date of nomination filing available to the CBI by July 5.
