NEW DELHI: Foreign tourist arrivals (FTA) crashed another 45% to 1.5 million in 2021 and were estimated at less than 14% of the pre-Covid level of 10.9 million in 2019. Data released by the tourism ministry on Tuesday estimated that foreign tourist arrivals in India crashed almost 75% to 2.7 million in 2020, as the government put travel restrictions. At 1.5 million, the number of foreign travellers visiting India last year was less than that seen in 1991, when it was pegged at a little under 1.7 million.
April 2021 onwards on a year-on-year basis there was a growth in international tourist arrivals.
The India Tourism Statistics 2022 was released by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar and Union minister G Kishan Reddy on Tuesday with the ministry expressing confidence that India’s aggressive push to vaccinate people and the diversity in India’s tourism offerings will revive travellers’ confidence.
The report also pointed out that while inbound tourism took a hit as a result of the pandemic, domestic tourism numbers in India grew over 11% in 2021, with the pent up demand for travel driving the increase from 61 million in 2020 to nearly 68 million in 2021. Tamil Nadu and UP topped the charts as the most visited states for domestic tourists.
While FTAs registered a decline, this was compensated in part by a 53% increase in arrivals of NRIs in 2021. The last year also saw an increased activity on the outbound travel front, with over 8.5 million Indians travelling abroad, a 17.3% increase, in comparison to 7.3 million outbound Indian travellers in 2020.
The top markets from which India received foreign tourists included USA, Bangladesh, UK, Canada, Nepal, Afghanistan, Australia, Germany, Portugal, and France, among others.
