In the Giridih Lok Sabha constituency of Jharkhand, a captivating electoral contest is unfolding, marked by an intense rivalry among three prominent Kurmi (caste) leaders.
The presence of these formidable Kurmi contenders has significantly transformed the race dynamics, making it challenging for any individual candidate to secure unwavering support based solely on caste allegiances.
Dipak Kumar, a resident of Gomia in Giridih Lok Sabha seat, stressed the crucial role of the Kurmi community, stating, “With approximately 18% of the electorate hailing from the Kurmi community, their pivotal role in determining electoral outcomes cannot be ignored.”
Despite this, all three major candidates are actively engaged in public outreach efforts. The Lok Sabha seat, which encompasses six assembly constituencies, has a total of 18,01,845 voters. Polling is scheduled for May 25.
The Giridih seat is being contested by incumbent MP Chandraprakash Chaudhary of Ajsu-Party, who faces formidable challenges from Mathura Mahato of INDIA bloc and the rising young leader Jairam Mahto, who heads the Jharkhandi Bhasha Khatian Sangharsh Samiti (JBKSS).
As each candidate competes for the support of the Kurmi electorate, the stage is set for a captivating electoral battle. Recognising the complex electoral calculations at play, the candidates are actively seeking support from various ethnic groups beyond their own caste affiliations.
