Man dies as 15-yr-old on scooter hits 2-wheeler; boy in shelter, dad held | India News

MUMBAI: A 32-year-old man was killed when a scooter driven by a 15-year-old boy collided with another two-wheeler coming from the opposite direction on the Nesbit bridge in Mazgaon on Thursday. The minor’s father has been arrested and the boy has been sent to the Children’s Observation Home in Dongri, said police.
Police identified the deceased as Irfan Shaikh, who had stepped out for breakfast. Both Shaikh and the minor, also from south Mumbai, were riding gearless scooters when the crash took place around 7.15am.
The teenager is a Class X student while his father runs a shoe shop. Cops collected the boy’s blood samples for medical test and sent them to a forensic laboratory in Kalina. He did not seem to be drunk, but sleuths are awaiting the report from FSL. The scooter will be examined by RTO, a police officer added.
Shaikh and the boy were taken to JJ Hospital. Shaikh died during treatment while the boy sustained minor injuries, said police. Shaikh’s body was handed over to his brother at the JJ hospital after post-mortem.
When asked if the scooter was registered in the name of the minor’s father, police said they were making inquiries about such details. “The boy was going to Mazgaon to buy biscuits for breakfast. This is what his family told us,” said police. The boy’s father will be produced before a court Friday.
Cops have registered a case under IPC sections 279 (rash driving on a public way), 304(2) (an act done with knowledge that it’s likely to cause death, but without intention to cause death, etc). Punishment under section 304 (2) is 10 years’ jail term or fine or both.
