PM Modi, Congress party pay tribute to first PM Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary | India News

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leaders paid tribute to the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 60th death anniversary.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi said, “I pay homage to former PM Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Ji on his death anniversary”.
Earlier today, the leaders of Congress paid tributes to Nehru on the occasion of his 60th death anniversary.The tribute took place at his memorial located at Shanti Van in New Delhi.
Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge, along with party’s parliamentary chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Rajya Sabha MP Ajay Maken, paid their tributes to the former Prime Minister.
Kharge termed Nehru as “Jewel of India” in a post on X.
“The history of India is incomplete without the incomparable contribution of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the architect of modern India, the one who took India forward in scientific, economic, industrial and various other fields, the dedicated guardian of democracy, the first Prime Minister of independent India and our source of inspiration. Our humble tribute to the “Jewel of India” on his death anniversary,” he said.
Jawaharlal Nehru was a freedom fighter. He played a pivotal role in India’s freedom movement. He also became India’s first Prime Minister after independence in 1947.
Nehru served as the Prime Minister for over 16 years before passing away from a heart attack on May 27, 1964. Following Nehru’s death, Lal Bahadur Shastri became the second Prime Minister of India.
Nehru is widely regarded as the pioneer of India’s Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). For his love for children, Nehru was also called “Chacha Nehru’, and his birth anniversary on November 14, is celebrated as Children’s Day every year in India.
