BHUBANESWAR: Three women were killed when eight wagons of a speeding goods train crashed into the waiting hall of Odisha’s Korai station. “The exact cause will be known after a thorough probe,” A M Choudhary, commissioner of railway safety (eastern zone), said. The authorities are also examining if the driver suddenly braked and whether it resulted in the wagons derailing.
Parbati Bindhani, 55, her daughter Kandhei, 26, and Abujan Bibi, 47, all natives of Jajpur who were in the waiting hall to board a local train, died when the wagons came crashing in. Kandhei’s twoand-ha lf-month-old son and husband had a miraculous escape. “I had gone to a nearby tea stall when the crash happened. Hearing the deafening sound, I returned to find my wife and mother-inlaw dead. My son was crying near the window of the waiting hall,” said Balaram Bindhani, 29, a daily-wage earner. “I am alive perhaps because I had gone out for tea,” he said. The four injured were discharged after first aid, said Shibashis Maharana, chief health officer of Jajpur.
Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced Rs 5 lakh to the next of k in of each deceased while CM Naveen Patnaik declared Rs 2 lakh each. “I convey my deep sympathy to the bereaved families,” Naveen said.
East Coast Railway chief PRO Bisw ajit Sahu said some wagons of the Chatrapurbound empty goods train entered the waiting hall of the station and damaged the building, too. “Thankfully, only a few passengers and relatives were waiting for a local train,” he said.
