Sharmila: Andhra CM’s sister Sharmila in talks to merge her party with Congress | India News

NEW DELHI: Andhra Pradesh CM YS Jaganmohan Reddy’s estranged sister, YS Sharmila, who started her own party Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Telangana Party two years ago, is learnt to be in talks with Congress for a merger that could happen soon, given that both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh will face assembly polls in less than a year, reports Mohua Chatterjee.
Sources said Congress wants Sharmila to focus on Andhra Pradesh, home turf of her late father and former CM of united Andhra Pradesh YS Rajasekhara Reddy, while her party primarily operates in Telangana and she could be reluctant in taking on her brother.
A Congress insider said YSR stood for united Andhra Pradesh and that sentiment could go against Sharmila in Telangana where she may be seen as an “outsider”. Also, after its victory in Karnataka, the resurgent Congress’s Telangana leaders may be hesitant to offer Sharmila a role right away. However, in Andhra Pradesh, Congress is on a much weaker wicket after YSRCP took away most of the party and it could look to rebuild the organisation with a part of YSR’s legacy, that comes with Sharmila. Political watchers said there could be some clarity on this issue on YSR’s birth anniversary on July 8.
