Thousands gather at Ansari’s funeral in UP’s Ghazipur, wife and elder son miss last rites | India News

GHAZIPUR: Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari was laid to rest near his parents’ graves in Kalibagh cemetery of Yusufpur Mohammadabad in Ghazipur district of UP by his family members on Saturday morning following his death on Thursday.
A sizeable crowd participated in the funeral procession that began from Mukhtar’s ancestral home, with his brother and MP Afzal Ansari, son Omar Ansari, nephew Suhaib Ansari – an MLA – and other family members and supporters in attendance.Mukhtar’s elder brother and former MLA Sibgatullah Ansari also paid his respects.
However, Mukhtar’s elder son and MLA Abbas Ansari, currently incarcerated in Kasganj jail for several criminal cases, and his wife Afshan Ansari, who has been on the run since Sept 2022 and carries a cash reward of Rs 50,000, did not participate in the last rites.
The mortal remains, transported from Banda (400km west of Ghazipur) around 1am on Friday, attracted a steady stream of mourners to pay their respects. By Saturday morning, the crowd swelled to a few thousands, with police restricting the entry of Mukhtar’s supporters from the main gate of his home for security reasons.
Before Mukhtar was laid to rest, Namaz-e-Janaza prayers were offered near his house and later in Kalibagh cemetery. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including police, Provincial Armed Constabulary, and paramilitary forces, were deployed to maintain order throughout the proceedings.
