MUMBAI: ED summons will now carry a unique QR code thus ruling out the possibility of miscreants forging the summons and extorting money from gullible victims. The summons issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act as well as Foreign Exchange Management Act will contain the QR code, an ED press release said.
“The recipient can verify the genuineness and authenticity of the summons received by them by scanning the QR code on the summons. When scanned, the QR code directs them to ED’s portal where the details of the summons can be seen by entering the passcode mentioned in the summons,” it said.
ED recently busted an inter-state gang who prepared and sent forged summons/ notices to high profile persons and businessmen and threatened them. The gang issued forged summons to the president and director of Nippon Paints, directing them to appear at Delhi ED office and attend proceedings under PMLA.
The company brought this matter to the notice of ED, who contacted the gang and asked them to come to Delhi for negotiation. After some hesitation, the gang members agreed and a team of ED and Delhi police arrested them including the kingpin, Akhilesh Mishra. Other arrested persons include Darshan Harish Joshi, also from Mumbai and Devender Dubey who came in a car with Government of India sticker, pretending to be an ED officer, the release said.
