BENGALURU: Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday said he will order a “comprehensive” probe into the actions of Chilume Educational Cultural and Rural Development Institute, the NGO accused of illegally collecting voter data, and that the probe will go back to 2013 and cover tenures of the Congress and JD(S)-Congress coalition governments as they have committed “worse mistakes”.
“The entire issue must bebrought into the open,” said Bommai, who, by virtue of being Bengaluru development minister, has been named as an accused in a complaint that Congress submitted to police. “At the moment, we have ordered a probe into data fraud pertaining only to 2022. But I will now ask officials to conduct a detailed probe into voter data fraud, which has been happening since 2013. People should know the truth. ”
He claimed that during theCongress tenure, agencies were given tenders to conduct even voter list revision, “unlike my government”, which gave permission to only conduct voter awareness drive as directed by EC. “The Congress government even empowered tehsildars to appoint booth-level officials to collect voter data, which is an unpardonable offence,” he said.
Bommai said conducting surveys is a common phenomenon which parties and MLAsindulge in. “That said, what is the extent of government involvement? While their (Congress) government gave a free hand to agencies to conduct work that was to be done by the EC, we have restricted ourselves to only what the EC mandated,” the CM said. “They claim some 15,000 voter names were deleted by government in Mahadevapura and KR Puram, but BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) has deleted some 46,000 names, which are much higher in BJP held segments,” he said.
