The Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) will mark International Olympic Day 2026 at the Nehru Indoor Stadium on Tuesday, June 23, at 4.00 pm, with the unveiling of its partnership with JSW Sports’ Inspire Institute of Sport among the key highlights.
The tie-up is expected to give Tamil Nadu athletes access to structured mentorship, technical support and knowledge-sharing from IIS, while also helping SDAT strengthen its athlete development systems across the state.
The event will also see former Olympians from Tamil Nadu being felicitated, along with the inauguration of completed works and the announcement of multiple stadium projects. The new infrastructure push is expected to focus significantly on throwing events, a sector that has gained greater relevance in Indian athletics after international success.
The programme comes after the state increased its spending on athlete welfare. Sports Development Minister Aadhav Arjuna had announced an additional Rs 12.67 crore for 2,600 residential athletes training at SDAT hostels, special sports hostels and centres of excellence, with higher allowances for food, uniforms and sports equipment.
Tamil Nadu has, in recent years, built a strong sporting profile through sustained investment, athlete support and the hosting of major events. The Olympic Day programme underlines that push, even as the state waits for clarity on the 2026 World Chess Championship, whose hosting remains uncertain.
