Madras High Court Questions EV Velu’s Decision to Seek Medical Treatment Abroad

The Madras High Court has questioned former Tamil Nadu minister E. V. Velu’s decision to seek medical treatment abroad, asking why he travelled overseas despite claims that Tamil Nadu provides excellent medical care.

Justice V. Lakshminarayanan raised the questions while hearing petitions filed by Velu and his son, E. V. V. Kumaran, in connection with proceedings involving a Look Out Circular (LOC) and a case registered by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC).

Case Linked to Alleged Lake Soil Excavation

The case relates to a DMK youth wing conference held in Tiruvannamalai on December 14, 2025. A complaint alleged that soil had been illegally excavated from Malappambadi Lake to level the conference venue.

According to the complaint, soil was removed from an area covering approximately 12 acres, with excavation depths reportedly ranging from 10 to 23 feet. The complainant alleged that the activity caused a financial loss of around ₹8 crore to the state government.

Following the complaint, the DVAC registered a case against former minister EV Velu and his son, Kumaran. The allegations are subject to investigation and have not been established as proven facts.

Police Clarify Position on Look Out Circular

During the hearing, the police informed the High Court that no Look Out Circular had been issued against EV Velu.

Velu and his son had approached the court seeking relief concerning the alleged LOC. The police also sought additional time to respond to the petition filed by Kumaran.

After considering the submissions, the court closed Velu’s petition and adjourned the hearing on his son’s petition to October 15, 2026.

Court Raises Questions About Overseas Treatment

During the proceedings, Justice Lakshminarayanan questioned why Velu had sought treatment abroad when Tamil Nadu is often described as having strong medical facilities.

The judge asked whether doctors were unavailable in the state or whether there was a lack of confidence in local medical professionals.

The remarks came during the hearing on the petitions and do not, by themselves, constitute a finding on the allegations in the underlying case.

The proceedings concerning Kumaran’s petition are scheduled to continue on October 15.
