Tanvi Sharma began her Korea Masters campaign with the same confidence that powered her to a maiden BWF World Tour title at the Taipei Open last week. The 17-year-old third seed defeated China’s Yuan An Qi 21-16, 21-15 to advance to the women’s singles second round in Asan on Wednesday.
The Indian teenager will next face Shriyanshi Valishetty, who beat Chinese Taipei’s Pai Yu-po 21-15, 21-14.
India also notched another victory in women’s singles as Mansi Singh came from behind to defeat South Korea’s Kim Joo Eun 14-21, 21-19, 21-9.
India’s biggest upset of the tournament so far came on Tuesday, when the men’s doubles pair of Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy and Krishna Prasad Garaga knocked out fourth seeds Worrapol Thongsa-nga and Chaloempon Charoenkitamorn of Thailand in the opening round.
Ranked No. 118 in the world, Roy and Garaga defeated the world No. 48 Thai pair 21-16, 21-18 in 42 minutes to book their place in the second round.
India also had representation in the men’s singles qualifying draw through Tushar Suveer. He opened with a 21-15, 21-12 victory over Canada’s Shaurya Gullaiya before going down 21-10, 21-17 to Japan’s Shogo Ogawa in the qualifying final, falling one win short of the main draw.
Elsewhere, Arjun Reddy Pochana and Achutaditya Rao Doddavarapu suffered a 21-3, 21-10 defeat to second seeds Choi Sol Gyu and Goh V Shem in the men’s doubles opening round.
In the women’s doubles, Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra bowed out after losing 21-15, 21-13 to Japan’s second-seeded pair of Ririna Hiramoto and Kokona Ishikawa.
