Former professional footballer Aseem Koraliyadan (45), who played for Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra in the Santosh Trophy, died in an accident in Coimbatore late on Wednesday.,
The police said the accident took place on Avinashi Road in the city around 10.30 p.m. when Aseem, who had been serving as Customs Inspector at Coimbatore International Airport, was heading to the airport for night shift duty.
An officer from the Traffic Investigation Wing (TIW East) said Aseem slowed down his scooter at the ‘U’ turn immediately before the airport junction and a truck that came from behind knocked down the two-wheeler. He was rushed to a private hospital nearby where duty doctors declared him dead.

The TIW East registered a case in connection with the accident and arrested the truck’s driver, Dinesh, of Sulur near Coimbatore. The body was handed over to family members and relatives after the post-mortem examination at the Government Medical College and ESI Hospital.
Sources said that Aseem, who hails from Areekode in Malappuram district, represented U-21 Kerala team, Vasco Sports Club, Salgocar FC, East Bengal FC and several I-League clubs during his long career. His twin brother Anees Koraliyadan is a football coach and former player.
