NEW DELHI: Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut said “character assassination of women” must stop, calling on society to examine its attitude towards women. She said women, particularly those in positions of power and authority, are often targeted through attacks on their character in an attempt to undermine them.“We all know that this is not restricted to India alone and is prevalent worldwide that character of working women, successful women, actors, politicians, women at the position of power and authority is targeted to bring her down,” Ranaut told reporters after chairing the District Development Coordination and Monitoring meeting at Kullu on Monday.The BJP MP’s remarks came when she was asked about Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay’s recent speech in which he warned against personal attacks, double-meaning insults and derogatory remarks targeting women.Ranaut, who played former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa in the 2021 biopic Thalaivii, referred to the alleged humiliation Jayalalithaa faced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.“In Tamil Nadu, we have seen that a very renowned actress was targeted for her relations,” she said, adding that relations are from both sides but only the woman is targeted for abuse, “cheer haran” (disrobing) and character assassination.“We as a society should look into our self that how do we look at women and do we really respect them or not,” she added.Vijay, in his speech in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, criticised derogatory political remarks against women and invoked the alleged abuse and humiliation faced by Jayalalithaa during the 1989 Assembly episode.His remarks came amid a recent controversy over comments attributed to
