Mexico’s green home kit turned heads during its World Cup 2026 opener against South Africa at the Estadio Azteca on June 11. But the jersey is more than just a striking design. It draws inspiration from one of Mexico’s most important historical artefacts while also paying tribute to one of the most iconic football shirts ever worn by El Tri.
Hosting the World Cup for the first time since 1986, Mexico faced enormous expectations both on and off the pitch. Adidas responded with a deep forest-green jersey that goes beyond the nation’s traditional colours, weaving elements of Mexico’s rich cultural heritage into its design.
The shirt features intricate patterns inspired by the country’s pre-Hispanic history, most notably the Piedra del Sol, one of Mexico’s most recognisable national symbols. Commonly known as the Aztec Sun Stone, the massive basalt sculpture is housed at the National Museum of Anthropology and is regarded as one of the most important artefacts from ancient Mexico.
Its cultural significance is such that Adidas reportedly required permission from Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History before reproducing the design for commercial use.
The jersey also nods to footballing nostalgia. Fans quickly drew comparisons to Mexico’s celebrated France 1998 World Cup shirt, which featured the famous calendar stone motif prominently across the chest and has since become one of the most beloved kits in international football.
A final detail sits beneath the collar. The words “SOMOS MÉXICO” (”We are Mexico”) are printed on the back of the neck, reinforcing a message of unity as the host nation competes on football’s biggest stage.
