Crocombe is uncapped but has featured regularly in recent Lions squads. He has 21 Division One wickets at 28.61 this season, as well as taking 4 for 65 in the Lions’ first unofficial Test against South Africa A earlier this month.
After Stokes and Atkinson, who also took a seven-wicket haul in the first Test, were made unavailable for selection, England recalled Jofra Archer to their 15, following Archer’s involvement in the IPL. They also have Matthew Fisher and Sonny Baker as seam-bowling options in the group.
Robinson has had a chequered fitness record with England and was playing at Lord’s after more than two years out of the side. His previous appearance, in Ranchi on the 2023-24 tour of India, was marred by a back injury sustained while batting that limited him to 13 overs with the ball.
Stokes, meanwhile, looks set to play for Durham in the next round of the County Championship. Durham’s head coach, Ryan Campbell, said that the club were still awaiting confirmation of his availability from the ECB, but was “75%” certain that Stokes would be involved despite being stood down by England while under investigation for breaching team curfew.
“With Stokes, we still don’t know for sure until we get told by England, but I’m thinking it’s 75% he’ll be playing,” Campbell said. “That’s going to be an interesting selection decision.”
