Given that the live-action ‘Moana’ just ran aground at the box office (it dropped 55% in its second weekend of release), Disney might be re-thinking its policy on retooling its animated back catalogue.
But if Colman Domingo (‘Sing Sing’) and Robert O’Hara (‘Slave Play’) have their way, a new movie based on 2009’s ‘The Princess and the Frog’ could go in an interesting, different direction.

Per Deadline, the duo is pitching an original story that features the movie’s Tiana, instead of simply a new version of the animated pic. It’s very early days yet, but we’d be fascinated to see what they dream up.

What’s the story of ‘The Princess and the Frog’?

The 2009 Disney animated outing –– its last entirely hand-drawn movie –– is set in New Orleans during the 1920s and based on E.D. Baker’s ‘The Frog Princess.’
It follows a waitress, Tiana (Anika Noni Rose), who dreams of opening her own restaurant. She’s set on turning a frog prince, Naveen, back into a human after he’s cursed by an evil voodoo witch doctor, Facilier. However, Tiana becomes a frog as well, and the couple must find a way to become human again.
What else is Colman Domingo working on?
Most recently seen in Steven Spielberg’s ‘Disclosure Day’ and the final season of TV’s ‘Euphoria,’ Domingo has a number of movies in the works, including a Nat King Cole biopic, ‘Scandalous!’ about the relationship between singer Sammy Davis Jr. and actress Kim Novak and thriller ‘An Innocent Girl,’ which is in post-production now.
