Hampshire 162 and 124 for 2 (Gubbins 40) lead Glamorgan 161 (Baker 4-34) by 125 runs

The hosts resumed on 149 for 9, adding 12 to their overnight score as van der Gugten attempted to protect Mir Hamza from the strike. The Dutch international, looking for a single on the final delivery of the over, fell into Baker’s trap when uppercutting to deep third.

With what was essentially a one-innings contest now ahead of them, Hampshire were able to pounce on some early loose bowling, particularly from Hamza. Gubbins and Orr flicked away any deliveries which strayed too straight and drove handsomely on a surface that had slowed and eased with less seam movement from that on the 17-wicket opening day.

A first sight of spin in the match offered more control from the right arm of Ben Kellaway but a breakthrough wasn’t possible until Gubbins was dubiously adjudged lbw from an inswinging Hamza delivery following a 70-run stand.

With the removal of Orr to a straightener from van der Gugten – after another brief delay taking out a further six overs – Hampshire eased passed 100 with a typical Jake Lehmann back-cut through the gap in the cordon. Toby Albert’s approach however was much more circumspect, the aim to get to day four without further damage.

Lehmann and Albert both had occasional moments of worry, however. The Australian left-hander could only marginally avoid one of three spread-out slips attempting to ride the bounce of a Zain-ul-Hassan delivery, while Albert occasionally played and missed when looking to score. The pair added 34 unbeaten to close the day.
