Veteran Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani has announced his departure from Boca Juniors after a three-year spell with the Argentine club.
The 39-year-old, who previously starred for Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli and Manchester United, joined Boca in July 2023 after leaving Valencia.
“As a coach of mine once taught me, the journey is the reward. And the journey has been magnificent,” Cavani said in a video posted on Instagram, without indicating whether he intends to retire from club football.
Nicknamed “El Matador”, Cavani is Uruguay’s second-highest goalscorer of all time, with 58 goals in 136 appearances. He retired from international football two years ago.
Cavani leaves Boca without winning a trophy and admitted that recurring injuries prevented him from making the impact he had hoped for.
“I had difficult moments that didn’t allow me to leave the mark I wanted at this club,” he said.
Hampered by fitness issues throughout his time in Buenos Aires, Cavani made 81 appearances, completed the full 90 minutes in just 27 of them and scored 28 goals.
Before joining Boca, Cavani enjoyed a glittering club career in Europe. He won six Ligue 1 titles during a seven-year stint with PSG between 2013 and 2020, before spending two seasons at Manchester United.
