Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel ‘Treasure Island’ is one of those perennial titles that is always seemingly being adapted in different mediums. It’s even been through Muppet movie treatment.
Now Ridley Scott, whose latest film, post-apocalyptic tale ‘The Dog Stars’ lands in theaters in a couple of months, is aboard a take on the tale. And he has Hugh Jackman attached to play notorious pirate Long John Silver (see more on the story below).

“At the end of the world, no one survives alone.”
Release Date: Aug 28, 2026
Run Time: 1 hr 40 min
Budget: $110,000,000
Per Deadline, the new potential movie exists as a package up for grabs by studios right now –– Scott’s regular collaborators at 20th Century Studios passed so as not to compete with corporate parent Disney’s development of future ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ films –– but we expect this one to be snapped up quickly.

What’s the story of ‘Treasure Island’?

With ‘Adolescence’ writer Jack Thorne (who also recently adapted another classic novel in ‘Lord of the Flies’) on script duty, the new film is reportedly a fresh take on Stevenson’s novel.
That story follows a young boy who uncovers the map to a legendary buried treasure, and he embarks on a perilous sea voyage to claim a hidden fortune, only to find himself locked in a deadly battle of wits with the charismatic and treacherous pirate Long John Silver (Jackman).

Most recently seen in cozy, wooly murder mystery ‘The Sheep Detectives,’ Jackman will be back on screens in another classic, much-adapted tale, this time ‘The Death of Robin Hood,’ due in theaters on June 19.
