Lionel Messi wins Princess of Asturias Award, joins Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams among recipients

Lionel Messi got another feather on his cap as he was felicitated with the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports – one of the most prestigious international accolades recognising careers of extraordinary significance and impact on society.

The truth is that for me it is a great pride to be able to receive this recognition because of the importance it has and for the fact that it is recognised not only for what I do on the pitch but also off the pitch. I am very happy and very grateful. I wanted to let you know and send a big hug to everyone. Thank you and see you soon,” Messi said.

Messi, who led Argentina to the FIFA World Cup 2022 title, became the first individual footballer to receive the award.

“Leo Messi, the player who has won the most titles in the history of football, has also earned the respect and admiration of everyone for his exemplary behaviour on the field and for his consistency, humility and commitment to the team game,” the jury’s statement read.

The Princess of Asturias Award annually recognises distinguished individuals and institutions in fields such as the Arts, Literature, Social Sciences, Scientific and Technical Research, International Cooperation, Concord, Communication and Humanities, as well as Sports.

Previous recipients in the Sports category include legends such as Rafael Nadal, Michael Schumacher, Serena Williams, and Eliud Kipchoge.
