The film stars returning cast members Meryl Streep (‘Mamma Mia!’), Anne Hathaway (‘The Odyssey’), Emily Blunt (‘Disclosure Day’), and Stanley Tucci (‘Spotlight’), as well as new cast members Justin Theroux (‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’), Simone Ashley (‘Picture This’), Lucy Liu (‘Rosemead’), and Kenneth Branagh (‘Dunkirk’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna about their work on ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’, developing the sequel, why now was the right time, writing the screenplay, reuniting with the cast, and creating the movie’s incredible costumes.

Moviefone: To begin with, David, can you talk about how the original film’s popularity has grown since it was first released and why now was the right time for the sequel?

David Frankel: Well, the popularity of the first movie will always just be a miracle to me. We made a movie about a girl who gets coffee and somehow it’s become this iconic generational touchstone. I’m just grateful that the audience has embraced it. That of course created a lot of interest in doing a sequel. We had a failure of imagination to figure out how to do one for 20 years. But I think fortunately we never really stopped talking about it and asking ourselves. For the first 18 years we said no, we hadn’t solved it. Then Aline had an insight, which was just to observe that this world has changed so much and that Miranda’s career is probably coming closer to the end than the beginning now. Then, Andy in midlife has to struggle with adapting to the changing world of journalism. That world has shrunk so dramatically and certainly print journalism and everything has moved to digital and the nature of digital journalism is so different. It was fascinating to us to have the opportunity to explore all of that, and at the same time with funny people and brilliant actors.

MF: Aline, can you talk about developing the screenplay for the sequel, updating the characters, and exploring the idea of the declining publishing industry?

Aline Brosh McKenna: The original spark was over the years seeing famous people getting in trouble on a regular basis. If every utterance and movement are being scrutinized, how many times have you seen famous people buying a train ticket, ordering coffee, or doing some moment from their personal life, and now we’re seeing it! So, she would’ve lost a lot of privacy and I think she would’ve gotten in trouble every two minutes about things she said. So that always made me laugh, just thinking about how Miranda Priestly would be miserable in the world that we live in now. Then really the other energetic pulse was how many journalists lose their jobs, and work numerous places. I mean, you’ll meet journalists that have been to 12 different publications and half of those went out of business while they were writing. You get an email or a text like they do in the movie that says, “Oh, well.” Honestly, I didn’t want to do anything that wasn’t funny, and that struck me as very funny because it’s very dire. Otherwise, I always felt like it might be cute, and that’s what we were trying to avoid was things being cute.

MF: Aline, can you talk about the challenges of writing a sequel to a film as popular as the original ‘The Devil Wears Prada’?

ABM: Well, we had different kinds of pressure the first time, which was just to get that piece together and to get it to make sense. But the pressure of something that speaks to a piece that people really love and have told me so many times over the years how many times they’ve watched it. I mean, we did feel a lot of pressure. So, it makes you work extra hard. Honestly, in addition to a very supportive studio, we have these really smart actors who would’ve called BS on any of it, and wouldn’t have done it if they didn’t think it was a good idea. So, I am so lucky to have these collaborators on this project that really, on a script level, are both very much digging in there with me and then also really cheering me on.

‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ will begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ and Hulu July 29th, and will be available on digital June 30th.

MF: David, what was it like reuniting with the big four (Meryl, Anne, Emily, and Stanley) for this sequel and “getting the band back together”?

DF: It was a challenge for each of them. Meryl dove in first. We started with her, and then it was a very quick round of phone calls to the others who just loved the idea. They didn’t even know what they were signing up for. But once we explained it to them where we were headed and where it started and where it went to, everyone was wildly excited. I think there’s so much affection between them. Emily and Stanley, are brother and sister-in-law, and Anne and Emily feel like they owe so much to Meryl. Meryl feels like she missed out on all the fun the first time because she was so withholding in the making of the movie. So, she was eager to be able to just hang out with them and have some laughs. It was just great to see everybody. It was really like a family gathering every day on the set. There’s that affection and it extended beyond just the cast. It was a reunion with the entire crew. We have Florian Ballhaus as the DP and Jess Gonchor as the production designer 20 years later, and we had the same gaffer, the same costume designers, the same grips and literally top to bottom, it was a reunion. So, that added to the sense of family.

MF: Finally, David, as you know fashion styles change constantly. Can you talk about working with your production team to create the costumes and looks for this film?

DF: I think the bottom line is I leaned on Molly Rogers, the costume designer for a lot of the fashion, and then she collaborated really closely with the actors. I think they all have amazing taste. They know what works for them. They know what works for their characters. Then, Molly’s ability to pull in both the stuff from next year and the stuff from 30 years ago and from the archives was unparalleled. Her theme always was to make the fashion timeless. One of the lovely things about the first movie is that the fashion itself still holds up 20 years later. We wanted to make a movie where, again, 20 years from now you could watch the film and you could still appreciate what people were wearing.
