Seventh seed Daniil Medvedev overcame a brief interrption in play from a bird to defeat US wild card Sebastian Gorzny in straight sets to move into the third round of the US Open 2026.
Medvedev was briefly left frustrated when a pair of birds sitting on the net forced a replay of a point he thought he had won.
“I saw them straight away and I thought the point would stop straight away and we didn’t,” he said after the match. “And the moment I hit the winner we stop. I was not happy with the decision.”
Bird interruptions aside, he was in fine form against wild card, and secured victory in just over two hours. He fired 14 aces past Gorzny and saved the sole break point he faced.
“The first two sets he was not playing the best tennis of his life maybe. The third set was much more competitive,” Medvedev said of the match.
“At the same time I feel like I had more break points and put more pressure on him.”
Medvedev will now face the winner of Jaume Munar and Arthur Rinderknech’s second round clash in the next round.
