Surrey 250 for 7 (Chathli 88*, Brown 62) beat Lancashire 246 for 9 (Jones 69, Gregory 3-42, Brown 3-46) by three wickets
The Lancashire opener top-scored with 69, sharing a partnership of 70 from 86 with Grace Johnson, but it was not enough to stave off the holders’ third consecutive defeat.
Asked to bat in overcast conditions, Lancashire quickly lost Seren Smale, undone by a ball from Brown that straightened to hit off stump before Jones and captain Ellie Threlkeld put on 51 from 70.
Threlkeld seemed well set on 20, only to pump Priyanaz Chatterji’s long hop straight to the point fielder and Maddie Penna departed without scoring, bowled miscalculating a pull off Gregory.
The leg-spinner also prised out Fi Morris, stumped chasing a widish delivery that pitched and turned to leave the Red Rose wobbling at 83 for four, but Jones cut Gregory to the boundary to advance to her 50.
Meanwhile, Johnson drove and swept the spinners to good effect in her spirited 39 from 56 – ended only by a remarkable one-handed grab on the run at midwicket by Paige Scholfield, who had already taken a routine boundary catch to dismiss Jones.
Some sturdy blows from Ailsa Lister (29 from 36) and Kate Cross (25 from 20) rekindled Lancashire’s impetus but, despite a generous total of 21 wides boosting the total, they fell just short of 250.
Defending it looked a harder task as Surrey sped out of the blocks in pursuit, passing 50 in the seventh over with Alice Monaghan crashing three back-foot boundaries off Cross and Sophia Dunkley (30 from 23) consistently finding gaps.
Three wickets in 14 balls altered the complexion of the chase as Grace Potts removed Dunkley and Scholfield and Johnson castled Monaghan (26 from 31), demanding a reset by the batters.
Alice Davidson-Richards (23 from 25) kept the scoreboard moving with a series of fours but, once she was clean bowled by Cross (three for 52), it was left to the fifth-wicket pair to get Surrey back on track.
Chathli gradually took command of the partnership, working the ball around and pouncing on loose deliveries to reach her half-century from 63 deliveries while Brown was five slower to that landmark.
Brown gifted Fi Morris a return catch with victory in sight and, although Surrey lost two more late wickets, Chathli slammed Cross over midwicket for four to propel them across the line with four overs to spare.
