The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games got underway in Glasgow, Scotland, on July 23 and will conclude on August 2.
So far, the nation has grabbed a total of 12 medals – two gold, seven silver and three bronze.
Jhandu Kumar opened India’s account with a bronze in para powerlifting. The first gold came through ace weightlifter Mirabai Chanu in the women’s 48kg category.
In fact, weightlifters have contributed the most for India in the ongoing campaign. Rishikanta Singh (men’s 60kg), Raja Muthupandi (men’s 65kg), Valluri Ajaya Babu (men’s 79kg) and Gyaneshwari Yadav (women’s 53kg) have all won silver while Bindyarani Devi (women’s 58kg) has clinched a bronze.
Sharmila Dhankar created history by becoming the first-ever Indian to win a CWG gold medal in para athletics. She finished first in the women’s shot put F57 final. In the same event, Shilpa K. Shyla bagged a bronze.
Sarvesh Kushare won a silver in men’s high jump.
On Tuesday, India added two more medals to its tally. Harjinder Kaur who grabbed a silver in women’s 69kg weightlifting with a total of 227kg. Later, Gulveer Singh clinched silver in men’s 10,000m.
